Spring Break

This week is Spring Break for me. Since I don't have any classwork to do over break I decided to do something I have been wanting to do for a long time. I bought a book called Notan, The Dark Light Principle of Design about 1-1/2 years ago and have been wanting to do the exercises in in ever since.

So this week is my opportunity to dig in. It is a short book with only 6 projects and my plan is to do one a day. I have done the first two projects so far using 20 year old construction paper left over my children's youth. I bought some new paper yesterday so future projects will be in black and white instead of dark gray and tan.

It is really interesting how such simple exercises can get you looking at things in a different way. I'm looking forward to do these again as well as doing the next projects.

This week's Diva Challenge is to do a monotangle using Shattuck. I decided to do a recursive version where the Shattuck string contains Shattuck which contains Shattuck. I think if you got really loose with this and left out the dark separating lines, you could make an interesting sky.

Here's to a recursively wonderful week!

  1. Really an original idea, I also like to have some open spaces in the tile, without tangles, just the way you did it now!

  2. Yay! I learned a new word---"recursive". Now I have to look it up. ;-) Maybe I'm just tired, but I find your Shattuck within Shattuck to be somewhat mind blowing. Very cool.

  4. Yes! I love this tangle within a tangle. I didn't even think of trying this with Shattuck. Thanks for the reminder of how much fun this can be!

  5. Oh yes, I see what you mean about a Shattuck Sky - lovely clouds. Great work and I hope you enjoy your projects.

  6. There's an infinity of possibilities here, one inside the other. An imaginative use of pattern.

  7. Neat exercises in that black and white project book. The one on the left reminds me of a spotted cow, and the one on the right, like the queen of spades sitting on her throne. And your Shattuck is great. Love the roundness of it. It does look like those aerial photos you see, of rice paddies all in terraces on a hillside. Gorgeous!

  9. Your diva tile is very clever :-) I like the way Shattuck looks within Shattuck! Your Notan project sounds very interesting - I must have a look at it.
